Installing SuperFOIL Foil Loft Insulation

Properties Best Suited to Foil Loft Insulation

Foil insulation is, of course, more than suitable for walls and floors too! We know choosing the correct insulation is an integral part of the long-term success and energy efficiency of your project. For this reason, SuperFOIL has a team of highly trained experts who are there to help you.

Newer properties

As a recently evolved technology, foil loft insulation is well-suited for mid-aged properties built from 1920 to 1960, or thereabouts. However, it can work well with some older properties, too. As always, when making a decision about which material is most suitable for the size and shape of your roof, it is best to get a second opinion from one of our expert surveyors before beginning the installation process.

Pitched Roof Ceiling Loft Insulation

SuperFOIL insulation is suitable and adaptable for many roofing types, including pitched roof set-ups. Entire loft interiors plastered head-to-toe in multifoil is a more common sight than simply fitting SuperFOIL onto the joist alone. This gives a loft an extra layer of protection, which is definitely useful if you still have storage purposes in mind for your loft.

Damp Lofts

SuperFOIL’s waterproof nature makes it ideal for roofs prone to dampness, though some specific types of SuperFOIL are much more specialised for resisting moisture build-up. Similarly, these specialised foils are great at reducing condensation throughout your home!

Foil Insulation Benefits

Effective loft insulation can dramatically reduce your energy bills, carbon footprint, and overall discomfort during cold weather! More than that, installing decent insulation can increase the value of your property. If you currently live in a home that is poorly insulated, or have in the past, the improvements that can be made by good loft insulation will be immediately felt. Here are some of the advantages to choosing a modern alternative product, SuperFOIL loft insulation:

Hygienic to install
As with recycled plastic loft insulation, SuperFOIL bears minimal risk of creating allergic reactions or sharp, inhalable fragments, so minimal safety equipment is required.
Incredibly versatile
SuperFOIL is adaptable enough to be installed in almost any area of your house that could conceivably need insulating, including walls and other structures. Feel free to consult our team about your options if you have wider insulation ambitions beyond lofts!
Reflects heat excellently
SuperFOIL is excellent at reflecting heat and circulating it throughout a building, and is flexible enough to be installed in almost any area of a loft, so you can also keep heat inside the loft itself if a conversion is desirable.
Resistant to moisture
One of SuperFOIL’s greatest strengths is its high resistance to moisture, dampness and vapour, which is also partly owed to the breather membrane mentioned above.
Modern and efficient
There is a growing market presence for foil loft insulation, partly down to its popular perception as a modernised, “high-tech” alternative to more conventional insulation materials. Many specialised types of SuperFOIL have nano technology coating to greatly improve performance.
Fully recyclable
At the end of its lifespan, foil loft insulation is recyclable. Although, like most insulation fabrics, SuperFOIL has great longevity and should sustain itself alongside the rest of your house, making it amazing value for money.
Maintains air flow throughout your house
With a breather membrane built-in as part of a unique ‘3-in-1’ design strategy, SuperFOIL has the ability to filter, purify and circulate air throughout your home.

Why Choose Professional Foil Loft Insulation Installers

  • Less stressful – For a guaranteed high-quality standard of work, a professional service like ours is always a safer bet compared to the likely stressful task of attempting to install insulation yourself.
  • High quality -With all of our experienced installers extensively trained and fully equipped, the risks of faulty fitting, personal injury or damage to your property are minimised when they are on the job.
  • It’s safer – Installation of insulation can be messy, uncomfortable and dangerous work due to the sharp, easily inhaled particles that shed from allergenic materials such as fibreglass, which may already be installed in your home and need replacing.
  • Less risky – We enforce the use of proper equipment to ensure everyone’s safety, such as goggles and face masks, to prevent particle inhalation and other injuries.
  • It’s tidier – Our loft insulation fitters are able to thoroughly survey your property to assess any potential hazards before the work begins, and will even tidy up any mess after the work is done for good measure.

Our Loft Insulation Process

Discover more about the steps we’ll take in the loft insulation process. Our simple, hassle-free process is designed to take you smoothly from initial enquiry to installing your loft insulation.

01

Free Survey

Before beginning the installation work, our professional surveyors will review your property to get a feel for the building’s dimensions and whether it is suitable for loft insulation. This is a great opportunity for us to create a brief project overview, assessing the ventilation, lighting, potential hazards, stability of the loft floorboards, and more.

02

Quote

Not long after the full survey is conducted and all your requirements are discussed, we will issue you a detailed quote, which will include a total cost breakdown and take into account the full scale of the work, so should be no worries about being left in the dark!

03

Place Your Order

Once you have an ideal date locked down, waste no time in booking with us! With only 25% deposit required, you can easily secure all the information you need to proceed, namely the contract, schedule of payment and a thorough overview of all the installers’ plans for the work ahead, with estimated dates of completion included.

04

Technical Survey

To ensure that no space on the loft floor is left uncovered, all stored objects should be removed before the assessment begins, if possible. Fitting loft insulation can be time-consuming work, particularly when older fibreglass or stone wool pads are to be placed or removed, especially if you want to still use your loft as a storage or living space.

05

Installation

When that’s done, the installers will come to lay down the insulation material. Our professionals are trained to use the correct safety equipment and precautions for all kinds of installation procedures, without taking any perilous shortcuts. For a standard-sized three-bedroom house, a full loft insulation installation should only take around 2-3 hours to complete.

Signs of Inadequate Loft Insulation

There are several telltale signs of poor loft insulation that you can keep an eye out for.

thermal imaging camera for house insulation
  • Draughts – During chilly weather, noticeable draughts coming from above or the loft ceiling feeling cold to the touch are sure signs that the heat retention is compromised.
  • Differing temperatures – If upstairs rooms of the house have noticeably different temperatures to downstairs – the upstairs rooms being much chillier than anywhere else in the house is definitely a bad sign.
  • Rising heating bills – Rising heating bills can also be a cause for concern, as you may be wasting more energy than needed to keep your house warm.
  • Traces of vermin – Traces of vermin like rodents and insects in your loft may be an indicator that they have broken through parts of the insulation material.
  • Infrared scan – If you can observe no particular symptoms but still feel that your loft insulation isn’t working properly, you can have an infrared scan performed during a survey to confirm the amount of heat it is losing.

    Michael Morton
Loft Insulation Installer helped me to get a grant from the council for loft insulation. From the initial site review to installation, the team provided a professional and knowledgeable service, making the entire process a very straightforward one. My thanks to everyone involved.
    Secretary

Dennis and Kade did a fantastic job in insulating our roof spaces. They treated our residents with the utmost respect at all times, as well as avoided 2 beehives along the way! True Professionals and a delight to work with.

    Debbie McCluskey

Loft Insulation Installers were on time for the appointment and insulated my loft with 300mm of insulation with funding as promised and no charge to me. They were clean and tidy and completed the job at the time specified. I would happily recommend this loft insulation company!

    Nigel Hinds

Loft Insulation Installer cleared out my loft of all its contents, hoovered it clean, and installed new wool insulation, eaves ventilators and boarding. The team also helped return my items for storage to the loft afterwards. The company was pleasant and straightforward to deal with throughout the process, thorough and trustworthy. The work was carried out tidily, and the house was left clean and neat. The work took less time than I had previously been advised. There was slight damage to a bedroom ceiling, and an appropriate resolution was swiftly agreed. Now I need to find out if it will keep the house warmer – I hope so.

    Graham

Such an easy company to deal with. From start to finish the communication was excellent. No lengthy waiting, a thorough survey, such that suitable materials and approach were taken. The installation team were fantastic – so polite, courteous, hard-working, knowledgable, respectful of us and our home and knowledgable. The area was left as clean as when they arrived. Nothing was too much trouble, despite some awkward and tight areas. The level of workmanship is really second to none and we are looking forward to reaping the benefits of what is now a properly insulated home. whether you have a relatively modern home or one that’s as quirky as ours (60’s style) I would not hesitate to recommend RJ Insulation as a credible provider.

    K Clarke

We needed two loft spaces re-insulated, so put out a request on Bark. RJ Insulation contacted us immediately and, after we looked at their website and checked their reviews, we arranged for their engineer to visit and provide a quotation. We were kept well-informed by email of exactly what, when and how all would happen. The insulation team arrived on time, were most professional, worked hard, did a brilliant job and cleaned up after themselves. They used lambs wool in the smaller loft and Superfoil in the larger loft – both look spectacular and our house is warmer already. An excellent company.

    Noor

From the initial contact with the company to the complete job done went very smoothly. The quotation, survey and installation of the insulation were done by very courteous, friendly people. They arrived on time on the day the storm Eunice was causing travelling very difficult and we were not expecting them to show up at all. They removed and bagged all the old insulation and installed the new insulation. I am also very pleased with loft boarding but there was some misunderstanding about the fitting and I was not happy about it. I contacted the office about this and I was assured that the fitters will return and finish the job to my satisfaction. I am very pleased that the promise was kept and all the work is done to a very high standard and we are very happy with the warm house. We will definitely recommend Loft Insulation Installer to everyone who wishes to have their loft installation done.

    Jo Worman

From the initial enquiry through to the end of the job was just fantastic. I had an immediate quote from the surveyor and everything was explained thoroughly. The job was to empty a rubbish tip that was the loft, including mattresses and water tanks and 40-year-old cladding, hoover the whole area, install the Superfoil to the rafters and lay new sheep wool and new boarding, a two-day job. I was quickly given date and had several calls from the office to ensure me that everything was going to plan. This is once-in-a-lifetime customer service and professionalism. The quality of the work is stunning. It’s incredible. I cannot say enough about this company, they really do deserve all the recognition and appreciation they get. Of all the work I have done in many years in many countries, this was the best experience. Super job, super team, super quality.
I wish them all the best.

    Anthony Davis

Great service – kept informed throughout, from initial quote to fitting. The guys fitting the insulations were hardworking, courteous and cleaned up well after themselves. Would thoroughly recommend Loft Insulation Installer.

    Rosalind Ainscow

Loft Insulation Installer service was excellent, efficient from initial enquiry/visit/survey to installation. Each member of staff we worked with were friendly and professional. Their advice was comprehensive, timely visit/inspection and their quotes were accurate when we checked them out. Each part of the job they let us know what they were doing and timeframe. The installation team arrived on time, worked diligently, and kept us informed throughout including videos and left the house spotlessly clean. We would highly recommend Loft Insulation Installer.

    Ellis

The Loft Insulation Installers were great communicators throughout the entire process, from quote to on-the-day install. They keep you informed of what was happening and why, showing you the work-in-progess so you know what you’re getting. The install team were a really nice bunch, friendly, and helpful. The did a fantastic job, and finished up with immaculately clean house from the 3rd floor down to front door, where they’d transported all the materials. Thanks to all involved – very happy to recommend!

    John Tamblyn

    Foil Loft Insulation Installation FAQs

How do you insulate a loft with foil?

Foil may be thin and, like most metals, more traditionally used as a conductor rather than an insulator, but it is highly reflective, so it can radiate heat back down into your home surprisingly well. The fact that foil-wrapped insulation is so thin actually makes it one of the most versatile materials for insulating vulnerable areas across an entire building, not limited to lofts.

    Does foil insulation stop condensation?

Yes, aluminium foil-wrapped loft insulation is great at reducing condensation. Since foil is traditionally used as a waterproof breathable membrane for the outside of other compatible insulation materials, some multifoil brands have dual functionality - they can insulate a loft while also being waterproof!

How does foil loft insulation work?

Foil loft insulation is usually applied to pre-existing insulation materials, typically older fibreglass installations, to boost its resistance to moisture damage. However, stronger multifoil products can function as insulators themselves due to their reflective properties.

Like other newer, innovative insulation materials, foil is relatively simple and clean to install. As a highly conductive material, the foil will still need to be handled carefully, however.

How does Foil loft insulation work?

    • The diagram below shows the inner workings of multifoil loft insulation.
    • Foam wadding – Despite the name, multifoil is not purely made of foil alone. The layers of aluminium are held together with strands of foam insulation material, which gives it some extra heft.
    • Air cavities – The small gaps between the layers of foil and foam wadding greatly enhance the insulating proficiency, since these cavities contain pockets of air that can cushion any breeze that hits them.
    How Foil Insulation Works SuperFoil

We don’t just install Foil insulation

We offer a wide range of different loft insulation materials, including recycled plastic, sheep wool, and foil. But what is actually used as loft insulation? Most materials used for loft insulation are mechanically woven into wool-like patterns and flattened into rolls of thick padding, though you may be astounded by the variety of ‘origin stories’ these materials can have. Insulation fibre can be taken from organic sources such as sheep wool, or plastic waste recycled for a better purpose… or even aluminium foil!

    Recycled Plastic Loft Insulation (SupaSoft)

Each pack made out of thousands of disused plastic bottles, SupaSoft is a leading brand of recycled plastic loft insulation. Easy to install, safe to handle and silky to the touch, SupaSoft is a reliable, environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional loft insulation material.

    Sheeps Wool Loft Insulation (Thermafleece)

Ever wonder how warm sheep must be for them to be able to easily withstand freezing temperatures? With organic, sustainable sheep wool loft insulation, you can experience the amazing heat-retentive and toxin-repellent effects that nature can provide in the comfort of your own home.

    foil Loft Insulation (SuperFOIL)

A truly innovative, modernised method of insulation first tested in NASA spacecraft, SuperFOIL is a form of aluminium multifoil loft insulation that can smartly reflect heat back down from the loft ceiling and circulate it back throughout the rest of the house.
